Description

Indications

Daclin Lotion is primarily used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Additionally, it can be applied for other skin conditions, including:

  • Skin infections like erythrasma, which is caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum
  • Rosacea, periorificial dermatitis, and folliculitis
  • Conditions like stasis, chronic lymphedema, and familial pemphigus
  • Dermal ulcers

Always follow the guidance of a registered healthcare professional before use.

Pharmacology

Daclin Lotion contains clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic effective against infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. Derived from lincomycin, clindamycin exhibits potent antibacterial and anti-acne properties. It works by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thereby inhibiting the early stages of protein synthesis. This antibiotic is particularly effective against gram-positive bacteria and anaerobes.

Microbiology

Clindamycin targets a range of bacteria, including:

  • Aerobic gram-positive cocci: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis (both penicillinase and non-penicillinase producing strains), Streptococci, Pneumococci
  • Anaerobic gram-negative bacilli: Bacteroides species, Fusobacterium species
  • Anaerobic gram-positive non-spore forming bacilli: Propionibacterium, Eubacterium, Actinomyces species
  • Anaerobic and microaerophilic gram-positive cocci: Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, Microaerophilic streptococci, Clostridium perfringens

Dosage & Administration

To apply Daclin Lotion:

  1. Begin by gently washing the affected area with warm water or soap.
  2. Allow the skin to dry completely (usually 30 minutes).
  3. Apply a thin layer of the lotion to the entire affected area twice a day.
  4. Avoid washing the treated area for at least 3 hours after application.

Noticeable improvement is typically seen after approximately 6 weeks, though optimal results may require 8 to 12 weeks of continuous use. Avoid contact with the eyes, lips, and nose during application.

Always follow the recommendations of a registered healthcare provider.

Interactions

Daclin Lotion may enhance the effects of neuromuscular blocking agents. Therefore, it should be used with caution when combined with these medications. In vitro studies have shown antagonistic interactions between Daclin and erythromycin. To avoid potential clinical issues, these two medications should not be used together.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare, but may include:

  • Skin irritation such as rash, itching, or erythema
  • Dryness, burning, or changes in skin color
  • Oily skin, diarrhea, colitis, or other gastrointestinal disturbances

If any side effects occur, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is insufficient data regarding the safety of Daclin Lotion during pregnancy. Animal studies have not shown adverse effects on the fetus. It is unknown whether clindamycin is excreted in breast milk following topical application. However, Daclin Lotion can be used during lactation with caution.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Daclin Lotion is for external use only. It should not be used orally, ophthalmically, or intravaginally.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure or use of sunlamps while using the product. Daily use of sunscreen is recommended.

Overdose Effects

Accidental ingestion of Daclin Lotion is unlikely to cause harm, as the product is intended for topical use. Ingesting large amounts may result in symptoms typical of therapeutic levels of oral clindamycin.
