Isoben Lotion

Indications

This antimicrobial emollient lotion is designed to treat dry and itchy skin conditions, particularly eczema and dermatitis. It can be directly applied to the skin or used as a soap substitute for cleansing.

Composition

Each gram of lotion contains:

• Liquid Paraffin BP 25 mg
• Benzalkonium Chloride USP 1 mg
• Chlorhexidine Hydrochloride BP 1 mg
• Isopropyl Myristate BP 25 mg

Each gram of cream contains:

• Liquid Paraffin BP 100 mg
• Benzalkonium Chloride USP 1 mg
• Chlorhexidine Hydrochloride BP 1 mg
• Isopropyl Myristate BP 100 mg

Pharmacology

This lotion combines two types of active ingredients:

• Benzalkonium Chloride and Chlorhexidine Dihydrochloride: These antimicrobial agents help reduce bacterial growth on the skin, which can worsen eczema, and protect against infections caused by scratching.
• Liquid Paraffin and Isopropyl Myristate: These emollients moisturize, soften, and protect the skin by locking in moisture, restoring the skin’s natural barrier, and preventing the drying effects of soaps and water.

It can be used alongside other emollients or treatments prescribed by your doctor.

Dosage

• Adults, Children, and the Elderly: Apply the lotion directly to the affected areas as needed. Massage gently until absorbed.
• As a Soap Substitute: Use the lotion in place of soap or shower gel for cleaning in the bath or shower.

Always consult a registered healthcare provider for advice regarding dosage and usage.

Administration

• Apply only to the skin. For best results, use regularly and as often as needed.
• To use the 500 ml bottle, unlock the pump dispenser by turning the top counterclockwise. Press the pump a few times to prime before dispensing.

For Leave-On Application:

1. Apply the lotion to the affected areas.
2. Gently smooth into the skin.
3. Allow excess lotion to absorb, without rubbing.
4. Reapply as needed.
5. If using other treatments, apply them alternately to avoid mixing products.

For Soap Substitute:

1. Use the lotion to cleanse instead of regular soap or shower gel. It does not foam or lather like typical cosmetic products.
2. After bathing, gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel.

Interactions

Isoben does not interact with other medications.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, liquid paraffin, isopropyl myristate, or any other ingredients in this lotion.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, this lotion may cause side effects in some users. If you experience any of the following, stop use and seek immediate medical attention:

• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Hives or a rash beyond the application area
• Difficulty breathing or wheezing
• Dizziness, fainting, or a strange metallic taste

Rarely, skin reactions like redness, irritation, or itching may occur, particularly with excessive use in areas of folded skin (e.g., groin, nappy area).

Pregnancy & Lactation

This product is generally safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It has been in widespread use without reported issues, though safety trials have not been conducted.

Precautions & Warnings

• Allergic Reactions: Severe allergic reactions, though rare, may occur, leading to blood pressure drops or unconsciousness. Do not use this lotion if you have had a reaction to chlorhexidine-containing products in the past.
• Fire Hazard: Do not smoke or be near open flames when using this product. Fabric that has been in contact with Isoben may catch fire easily. Wash clothing and bedding thoroughly.
• Test on Small Area: If you have sensitive skin, start by testing the product on a small area, especially when using on the face or for children.
• Avoid Eyes: Be cautious when applying near the eyes.
• Slippery Surfaces: Using the lotion as a soap substitute may make surfaces slippery. Use caution when entering or exiting the bath or shower.

Cetostearyl Alcohol may cause localized skin reactions (e.g., contact dermatitis). Consult your doctor if you’ve had similar reactions to any ingredients.
