Pharmacological Information:
Permethrin is a pyrethroid-based scabicide and pediculocide. It works by causing paralysis and death of pests through inhibiting sodium ion influx across nerve cell membranes, delaying repolarization. Crotamiton also acts as a scabicide and antipruritic, effective against Sarcoptes scabei, the scabies mite, and it serves as an effective pediculocide as well.
Dosage:
- Adults & Children Over 2 Years: Apply Permethrin & Crotamiton lotion to the clean, dry skin, avoiding the head and face. Focus on areas like the fingers, toes, wrists, armpits, genital region, breasts, and buttocks. Avoid applying near the eyes and mouth.
- Elderly: Use the lotion over the entire body, including the neck, ears, face, and scalp. Be cautious around the eyes.
- Children Under 2 Years: Application should only be done under medical supervision. Use the lotion across the entire body, excluding the eyes and mouth area.
- Post-Application Care: Leave the lotion on for at least 8 hours. If hands are washed within 8 hours, reapply the lotion. After 8-12 hours, wash the entire body thoroughly.
Consult a registered healthcare provider for personalized dosage recommendations.
Administration:
- Apply the lotion to clean, dry skin. Avoid applying right after a hot bath or if the skin is overheated.
- After 8-12 hours, wash the body thoroughly. Clean all clothes and bedding with hot water to remove any traces of lotion.
- To prevent re-infestation, other family members should apply the lotion as a preventive measure.
- Important: Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth area to prevent irritation.
Interactions:
Avoid using corticosteroids for eczema-like reactions before treatment with Permethrin, as it may worsen scabies by lowering the immune response to the mites. The risk of adverse interactions with corticosteroids is minimal, though.
