Indications
Oralon Mouthwash is an effective antimicrobial solution designed to prevent the formation of dental plaque. It is commonly used as a supportive treatment for gingivitis and for maintaining optimal oral hygiene, especially in situations where regular tooth brushing is challenging (e.g., following oral surgery or in individuals with physical or mental disabilities). It can also be used after periodontal surgery or treatment to promote healing of the gums.
Use as directed by a registered healthcare provider.
Pharmacology
Chlorhexidine, the active ingredient in Oralon Mouthwash, is a potent cationic agent with a broad antimicrobial spectrum, effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It exhibits both bacteriostatic (inhibiting bacterial growth) and bactericidal (killing bacteria) effects, depending on the concentration. At higher concentrations, chlorhexidine binds to the negatively charged bacterial cell walls, leading to cell death. At lower concentrations, it disrupts the osmotic balance of bacterial cells, causing leakage of essential ions like potassium and phosphorus.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Rinse the mouth thoroughly with 10 ml of Oralon Mouthwash for one minute, twice daily. Prior to dental procedures, rinse for one minute before treatment. Chlorhexidine is incompatible with anionic agents found in most regular toothpastes, so use these products at a different time of day or rinse your mouth between applications.
For gingivitis, a one-month course of treatment is recommended, although response times may vary. For conditions like aphthous ulcers or oral candidiasis, continue treatment for 48 hours after symptoms resolve. For denture wearers, soak the dentures in Oralon Mouthwash for 15 minutes, twice daily.
Children & Elderly: The standard adult dosage is appropriate for individuals aged 12 and older, unless otherwise advised by a dentist or doctor. Children under 12 should not use the product unless recommended by a healthcare professional.
Route of Administration:
For external (oral) use only.
Use as directed by a registered healthcare provider.
Interactions
Oralon is incompatible with anionic agents found in some dental products.
Contraindications
Chlorhexidine Gluconate should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine or any other component of the formulation. Allergic reactions are extremely rare.
Side Effects
- Discoloration: A temporary discoloration of the tongue and teeth may occur. This discoloration can be prevented by reducing the consumption of staining substances (e.g., tea, coffee, red wine) and regular brushing with conventional toothpaste. The stain is usually not permanent and can often be removed with professional cleaning or scaling.
- Taste Disturbance: A transient change in taste or a mild burning sensation of the tongue may occur initially but tends to decrease with continued use.
- Oral Desquamation: If oral peeling occurs, dilute the mouthwash with equal parts water to continue use.
- Parotid Gland Swelling: Swelling of the parotid glands is rare but has been reported. This usually resolves spontaneously once treatment is stopped.
- Skin Reactions: Some individuals may experience skin irritation, though this is uncommon.
- Allergic Reactions: Though very rare, allergic reactions, including hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis, have been reported.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is no evidence to suggest that Chlorhexidine Gluconate adversely affects the fetus during pregnancy or infants during breastfeeding. No special precautions are necessary.
