Description

Indications

Iventi serves as an effective treatment for various conditions including acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections, as well as complicated intra-abdominal infections and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Pharmacology

Moxifloxacin, a fourth-generation synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class, demonstrates potent activity against a diverse range of bacteria, including gram-positive, gram-negative, anaerobic, and atypical strains, such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Its mechanism involves inhibiting topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, crucial enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair.

Dosage & Administration

The recommended dosage for various conditions is as follows:

  • Acute bacterial sinusitis: 400 mg once daily for 7-10 days.
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 400 mg once daily for 5-10 days.
  • Community-acquired pneumonia: 400 mg once daily for 7-14 days.
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections: 400 mg once daily for 7 days.
  • Complicated skin and skin structure infections: 400 mg once daily for 7-21 days.
  • Complicated intra-abdominal infections: 400 mg once daily for 5-14 days.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease: 400 mg once daily for 14 days.

Interactions

Administration of Iventi with antacids, sucralfate, multivitamins, or multivalent cations (e.g., iron or zinc) can decrease its absorption. Concurrent use with NSAIDs may heighten the risk of convulsions, while with warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding, necessitating avoidance of such combinations.

Contraindications

Iventi is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Iventi encompass nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Moxifloxacin falls under US FDA pregnancy category C and is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

Caution should be exercised as Iventi may elevate the risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. Discontinuation is advised upon experiencing tendon pain or inflammation. It should be avoided in patients with known QT interval prolongation, uncorrected hypokalemia, and those receiving Class IA or Class III antiarrhythmic agents.

Use in Special Populations

No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with renal or hepatic impairment. However, safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients and adolescents under 18 years old have not been established.

Therapeutic Class

Iventi belongs to the therapeutic class of 4-Quinolone preparations.
