Indications
Xibrofen ophthalmic solution is designed for managing postoperative inflammation and alleviating ocular pain in patients who have undergone cataract surgery.
Pharmacology
Xibrofen contains Bromfenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It works primarily by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 and -2, thus blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins, which play a key role in various forms of intraocular inflammation. Research in animal models has demonstrated that prostaglandins can disrupt the blood-aqueous humor barrier, cause vasodilation, enhance vascular permeability, trigger leukocytosis, and raise intraocular pressure.
Dosage & Administration
For effective management of postoperative inflammation following cataract extraction, administer one drop of Xibrofen ophthalmic solution to the affected eye(s) once daily. This treatment should begin one day prior to the surgery, continue on the day of the procedure, and be maintained for the first 14 days postoperatively.
Always follow your physician’s instructions regarding medication use.
Contraindications
Xibrofen is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
Side Effects
Common adverse effects may include abnormal sensations in the eye, conjunctival hyperemia, irritation (such as burning or stinging), ocular pain, itching, redness, headaches, and iritis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C: There are no well-controlled studies available in pregnant women. This medication should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. Caution is advised when administering Bromfenac to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Topical NSAIDs can potentially slow the healing process. Similarly, the use of topical corticosteroids may also hinder healing. Concurrent use of topical NSAIDs and corticosteroids may increase the likelihood of healing complications. Exercise caution with Xibrofen in patients who have bleeding tendencies or are on medications that could extend bleeding time.
