Pharmacology
Prosma contains Ketotifen, a powerful anti-allergic agent. Similar to sodium cromoglycate, Ketotifen is used for the long-term prevention of asthma. It also functions as an antihistamine and possesses potent anti-anaphylactic effects, helping to prevent asthma attacks. Ketotifen provides sustained inhibition of histamine reactions and has shown effectiveness in clinical studies, particularly for asthma prevention.
Studies have demonstrated that Ketotifen, when taken orally, is as effective as selective mast cell stabilizers used for inhalation. It also reduces the frequency, intensity, and duration of asthma attacks. In some cases, it even eliminates asthma attacks completely. Additionally, Ketotifen can reduce the need for corticosteroids and bronchodilators. The full preventative benefits of Ketotifen may take several weeks to manifest, but it is not effective in reversing established asthma attacks.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: Take 1 mg twice daily with food. In severe cases, the dosage may be increased to 2 mg twice daily.
- Children (Above 3 years): 1 mg twice daily with food. For children who are easily sedated, start with 0.5 to 1 mg at night for the first few days, or follow the physician’s guidance.
- Elderly: Administer the same dosage as adults unless otherwise directed by a healthcare provider.
Always follow your doctor’s instructions for proper use.
Drug Interactions
Prosma may enhance the sedative effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol. It may also cause a temporary reduction in platelet count when taken with oral antidiabetic medications, so it is advisable to avoid this combination.
Contraindications
Avoid Prosma if you are taking oral antidiabetic drugs due to the potential for a drop in platelet count. Although there is no evidence of teratogenic effects, the use of Ketotifen during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended without medical advice.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, and occasionally dry mouth or mild dizziness. These side effects typically subside after a few days of use.
Pregnancy and Lactation
While no teratogenic effects have been reported, Prosma is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation without a doctor’s consultation.
Precautions and Warnings
- Asthma Treatment Continuity: Continue existing asthma treatments for at least two weeks after starting Prosma, especially if using systemic corticosteroids or ACTH, to avoid potential asthma exacerbation.
- Infection and Medication Adjustment: If an infection occurs, complement Prosma with specific antimicrobial treatment.
- Caution with Machinery and Vehicles: Prosma may impair reactions during the first day of treatment, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
