Indications
This formulation is designed for both the treatment and prevention of deficiencies in Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc, particularly during pregnancy and lactation.
Composition
Each capsule comprises:
- Elemental Iron: 50 mg (from Carbonyl Iron INN)
- Folic Acid (BP): 500 micrograms
- Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate (USP): 61.80 mg (providing 22.50 mg of elemental Zinc)
Pharmacology
This timed-release capsule combines Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate. Carbonyl Iron boasts an impressive iron content of at least 98%, offering high bioavailability and low toxicity, making it a safer and more effective option for iron supplementation.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Take one capsule daily before meals or as advised by your healthcare provider.
Interactions
Carbonyl Iron may reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penicillamine. Folic Acid can interact with antiepileptic medications, potentially lowering plasma levels of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone.
Contraindications
Do not use this product if you have a known allergy to any of its components or if you suffer from iron overload.
Side Effects
Possible gastrointestinal side effects include nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea. Some patients may notice dark stools. Carbonyl Iron pellets are included to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort, though rare allergic reactions may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
It is advisable to avoid medication during the first trimester of pregnancy unless there is clear evidence of iron deficiency. Supplementation with Iron, Zinc, and Folic Acid is justified during the remainder of pregnancy when dietary intake is insufficient.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in patients with conditions of iron overload, such as hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, or red blood cell aplasia. If treatment is ineffective, further investigation is necessary to identify other potential causes of anemia. Caution is advised for patients with renal failure due to the risk of Zinc accumulation.
Overdose Effects
Overdosing on Carbonyl Iron may result in symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, dark stools, rapid heartbeat, fever, coma, or seizures.
Therapeutic Class
Combined preparation of Iron, Vitamins, and Minerals.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
