Description

Indications:

  • Micoral Oral Gel is effective for treating oral and gastrointestinal candidiasis and for eliminating fungal colonization in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
  • It also helps treat secondary bacterial infections caused by gram-positive bacteria.
  • Micoral Cream is indicated for various dermatomycoses, including athlete’s foot (Tinea pedis), ringworm (Tinea corporis), jock itch (Tinea cruris), and candidiasis. It can also be used for intertrigo, perianal infections, angular cheilitis, and otitis externa.
  • Micoral Cream provides rapid relief from itching associated with infections.

Pharmacology:

  • Miconazole is an antifungal agent that targets a wide range of dermatophytes and yeasts. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes, leading to cell death.
  • The oral absorption of Miconazole is low (25-30%), but it binds strongly to plasma proteins and is metabolized in the liver.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Oral Gel:
    • For oral candidiasis in infants (4-24 months): Apply 1.25 ml, 4 times a day after meals.
    • For children and adults (2 years and older): Apply 2.5 ml, 4 times a day after meals.
    • For gastrointestinal candidiasis: 20 mg per kg body weight daily, in four divided doses (up to 10 ml gel, 4 times daily).
  • Cream: Apply generously twice daily for conditions like athlete’s foot and jock itch. For tinea versicolor, apply once daily. Continue for 2-5 weeks to prevent relapse.

Interactions:

  • Avoid concurrent use with Terfenadine, Astemizole, and Cisapride as Micoral may inhibit their metabolism.
  • Micoral may alter the metabolism of Phenytoin and Cyclosporine, increasing the risk of toxicity.

Side Effects:

  • Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and allergic reactions with long-term use.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • The safety of Micoral during pregnancy is not well-established. Use only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Caution is advised during breastfeeding as the drug may be excreted in breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Monitor anticoagulant and phenytoin levels if used alongside Micoral.
  • Ensure proper administration in children to avoid choking.

Storage:

  • Store in a dry place, away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
