Indications
MarinCal-DX is used for the treatment and prevention of:
- Osteoporosis
- Osteomalacia
- Tetany
- Hypoparathyroidism
- Osteogenesis disorders
It also serves as a supplement for calcium deficiencies in children, individuals with rickets, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and elderly patients. Additional uses include managing pancreatitis and acting as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.
Composition
Each tablet contains:
- Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) 1250 mg (equivalent to 500 mg elemental Calcium) & Vitamin D3 200 IU
- DX tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate 1500 mg (equivalent to 600 mg elemental Calcium) & Vitamin D3 400 IU.
- Effervescent tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) 1500 mg (equivalent to 600 mg elemental Calcium) & Vitamin D3 400 IU.
Pharmacology
Calcium is essential for numerous body functions, and deficiency can affect bone health and calcium balance. Calcium Carbonate sourced from coral ensures superior absorption, aiding in bone growth and osteoporosis prevention. Vitamin D3 enhances calcium absorption in the gastrointestinal tract and helps maintain calcium balance. Together, they have a synergistic effect in preventing fractures and bone degeneration.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults & Adolescents: 1 tablet once or twice daily, or as prescribed by a physician.
- Children: 1 tablet daily.
Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water, stir, and drink immediately. For best absorption, take after meals.
Interactions
- Thiazide diuretics reduce calcium excretion, potentially causing hypercalcemia; monitor serum calcium levels.
- Corticosteroids may reduce calcium absorption.
- Tetracyclines, cholestyramine, and paraffin oil can inhibit calcium absorption; take calcium 2-3 hours apart.
- Cardiac glycosides: Hypercalcemia can enhance toxicity.
- Bisphosphonates and sodium fluoride: Take MarinCal-DX 3 hours before or after these medications.
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Severe renal insufficiency
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Concurrent use with digoxin (requires monitoring)
Side Effects
- Common: GI irritation, constipation, nausea, vomiting.
- Serious: Hypercalcemia, allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats.
- Rare: Skin rash.
Pregnancy & Lactation
MarinCal-DX can be used during pregnancy and lactation if calcium and vitamin D are deficient. Ensure that the daily intake does not exceed 1500 mg of calcium and 600 IU of Vitamin D to avoid potential harm to the fetus.
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor calcium levels, renal function, and kidney stones during long-term use, especially in elderly patients or those on cardiac medications.
- Use with caution in patients with sarcoidosis, renal insufficiency, or immobilized osteoporosis.
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, constipation, fatigue, and in severe cases, coma.
- Treatment: Discontinue use, monitor serum calcium, and provide supportive care.
