Description
Lamitrin ER is an effective treatment for epilepsy and bipolar disorder, belonging to the phenyltriazine class of antiepileptic drugs. It works by inhibiting voltage-sensitive sodium channels, which helps stabilize neuronal membranes and reduce the release of excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate and aspartate, thereby controlling seizures and mood fluctuations.
Pharmacology
While the precise mechanism of action of Lamitrin ER is not fully understood, it is believed to work similarly to other antiepileptics, such as phenytoin and carbamazepine, by inhibiting voltage-sensitive sodium channels. Lamotrigin’s action also includes suppression of glutamate release, which contributes to its anticonvulsant effects. Additionally, it has been shown to interact with several receptors and may contribute to its effectiveness in managing some types of neuropathic pain.
