Indications
Veratin tablet is indicated for the treatment of the following conditions:
- Strongyloidiasis: Intestinal strongyloidiasis caused by Strongyloides stercoralis
- Onchocerciasis: Onchocerciasis due to Onchocerca volvulus
- Filariasis
- Scabies
- Head Lice
Strongyloidiasis: Veratin is used for the treatment of intestinal strongyloidiasis, with a high cure rate following a single dose of 200 mcg/kg.
Onchocerciasis: Veratin is also effective against onchocerciasis, supported by randomized clinical studies in endemic regions of West Africa.
Pharmacology
Veratin contains Ivermectin, which binds selectively to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This leads to an increase in chloride ion permeability, causing hyperpolarization of the cells and eventually killing the parasite.
Dosage & Administration
- For Treatment (COVIO Positive):
- 2 Veratin tablets (6 mg) once daily for 5 days.
- For Prophylaxis:
A single-dose regimen to be taken on Day 1 and repeated on Day 7.
Dosage depends on body weight, ranging from 1 to 3 tablets (3 mg or 6 mg per tablet). - Strongyloidiasis:
A single oral dose of Veratin, approximately 200 mcg/kg of body weight, is recommended.
Dosage Guidelines for Strongyloidiasis:- 15-24 kg: 3 mg/kg
- 25-35 kg: 6 mg/kg
- 36-50 kg: 9 mg/kg
- 51-65 kg: 12 mg/kg

80 kg: 200 mcg/kg
- Onchocerciasis:
A single dose of approximately 150 mcg/kg, with intervals of 12 months or as directed.
Dosage Guidelines for Onchocerciasis:- 15-25 kg: 3 mg/kg
- 26-44 kg: 6 mg/kg
- 45-64 kg: 9 mg/kg

Interaction
- Rare interactions with anticoagulants like Warfarin, potentially increasing INR (International Normalized Ratio).
Contraindications
- Not recommended for patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of this drug.
Side Effects
- Strongyloidiasis: Mild side effects include fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and mild skin reactions.
- Onchocerciasis: Possible reactions include lymph node enlargement, rash, fever, and eye-related symptoms, though most symptoms resolve without treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Category C. Safety has not been established during pregnancy.
- Lactation: Ivermectin is excreted in breast milk; use with caution during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution is advised in patients with a history of Mazzotti reactions or those with Loa loa co-infection.
- Use in pediatric patients under 15 kg and elderly patients should be considered on a case-by-case basis.
