Description

Kerasol is a prescription-only topical treatment designed to effectively eliminate excessive keratin associated with hyperkeratotic skin disorders. These disorders include various forms of ichthyosis (vulgaris, sex-linked, and lamellar), verrucae, keratosis palmaris and plantaris, keratosis pilaris, pityriasis rubra pilaris, and psoriasis, affecting areas such as the body, scalp, palms, and soles.

Pharmacology

Salicylic Acid is a potent keratolytic agent with mild antiseptic properties when applied topically. At lower concentrations, it exhibits keratoplastic activity, aiding in the correction of abnormal keratinization. In higher concentrations, Salicylic Acid promotes keratolytic effects, leading to skin peeling. This compound works by softening and disrupting the stratum corneum through increased hydration, likely due to a decrease in pH, which causes the outer layer of the skin to swell, soften, and eventually shed. Caution is advised, as excessive use can lead to necrosis of healthy skin. At elevated concentrations, Salicylic Acid may have a caustic effect. Adequate moisture is crucial for Salicylic Acid to perform effectively, facilitating the maceration and exfoliation of epidermal tissues. The agent also possesses mild antifungal and antibacterial properties.

Dosage & Administration

  • For 6% & 12% Salicylic Acid: Apply once daily to the affected area. If possible, hydrate the area for 5 minutes before application. It is advisable to cover the area overnight and wash it off in the morning. Suitable for children over 2 years old.
  • For 2% Salicylic Acid: Apply enough medication to cover the affected area once daily during the first week, increasing to 2-3 times daily from the second week, gently rubbing it in. After 3-5 minutes, rinse the face with cool water. Suitable for children over 2 years old.

Always consult with a registered healthcare professional before using any medication.

Interactions

Avoid using other topical products on the treated area unless instructed by a healthcare provider, as they may interfere with treatment or increase skin irritation.
