Indications
Fluvent is recommended for:
- The prevention and treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis, including hay fever, and perennial rhinitis.
- It effectively reduces inflammation in the nasal mucosa without causing significant systemic effects.
Note: Always use Fluvent under the guidance of a registered healthcare provider.
Description
Fluvent is a synthetic corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory effects. Available as a fine aerosolized suspension for nasal application, Fluvent delivers its active ingredient, Fluticasone Propionate, directly to the nasal mucosa via a metered spray pump. Each Fluvent Nasal Spray bottle contains 120 doses.
Pharmacology
When applied topically to the nasal passages, Fluticasone Propionate exhibits anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive actions. Although the exact mechanism is not fully understood, it likely involves:
- A reduction in inflammatory cells such as basophils, leukocytes, and mast cells at the epithelial surface.
- Decreased eosinophil activity and sensory nerve sensitivity.
- Reduced secretion from cholinergic receptors and fibroblast activity.
Other potential mechanisms include stabilizing lysosomal membranes and inhibiting capillary dilation, reducing capillary permeability, and preventing the release of damaging enzymes.
Dosage
- Adults and children over 12 years: 2 sprays per nostril once daily, ideally in the morning. For some individuals, 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily may be recommended, but the total daily dose should not exceed 4 sprays.
- Children aged 4-11 years: 1 spray per nostril once daily, with a maximum of 4 sprays per day. The use of Fluvent for perennial rhinitis in children under 12 has limited clinical data.
- Children under 4 years: Fluvent nasal spray is not recommended for children younger than 4 years, as safety and efficacy have not been established.
For best results, use Fluvent regularly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Note: Always follow the prescribed dosage and consult your healthcare provider for personalized recommendations.
Administration
To use Fluvent Nasal Spray:
- Shake the bottle gently and remove the dust cover.
- Hold the spray with your thumb under the bottle and forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle. Press down to release a fine mist. If it’s your first time using the spray or it hasn’t been used in a week or more, press the applicator several times to prime it.
- Clear your nostrils by gently blowing your nose.
- Close one nostril and insert the applicator into the other nostril. Tilt your head forward slightly and keep the bottle upright. While inhaling through your nose, press the applicator to release one spray.
- Breathe out through your mouth and repeat the process for the other nostril.
Cleaning Instructions:
- Clean the nasal applicator once a week:
- Remove the dust cover and pull off the applicator.
- Wash the applicator and dust cover in warm water.
- Shake off excess water and let it air dry.
- Reattach the applicator and dust cover once dry.
Contraindications
Fluvent is contraindicated in individuals who are allergic to any of its components.
Side Effects
Fluvent has minimal systemic absorption, resulting in fewer side effects. However, possible side effects include:
- Dryness or irritation in the nose or throat
- Unpleasant taste or smell
- Increased frequency of nosebleeds
Pregnancy & Lactation
- There is limited data on the safety of Fluvent during pregnancy. It should only be used if the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.

Although rare, the use of Fluvent may lead to:
- Wheezing or nasal septum perforation
- Cataracts, glaucoma, or increased intraocular pressure
- Systemic effects from prolonged or excessive use, particularly with higher doses
Use Fluvent strictly as directed by your healthcare provider and avoid exceeding the recommended dosage.
