Indications
This supplement is recommended for the prevention of iron deficiency, particularly when an inadequate diet requires additional zinc and iron during pregnancy and for the treatment of anemia.
Always use as directed by a registered healthcare professional.
Description
This oral supplement combines iron, folic acid, and zinc, specifically formulated to address deficiencies of iron, folic acid, and zinc in the body.
Pharmacology
Ferrous Ascorbate, Folic Acid, and Zinc work synergistically as nutritional supplements. Ferrous Ascorbate, a blend of iron and Vitamin C, helps restore iron levels in the body and corrects iron deficiency anemia. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption, ensuring optimal effectiveness. Folic Acid, a vital B vitamin, plays a key role in the production of red blood cells that transport oxygen throughout the body. It is also crucial during pregnancy to support the development of the unborn child’s brain and spinal cord. Zinc, an essential trace mineral, aids in overall body nutrition.
Dosage & Administration
Adults & Elderly: Take one tablet daily, either before or after meals (food does not affect absorption), or as directed by your physician. In cases of more severe deficiency, two tablets daily may be required, as prescribed.
Pediatric Patients: The safety and effectiveness of this supplement for children have not been established.
Always follow the instructions of a registered healthcare professional.
Interactions
Iron may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. It is recommended not to take Ferrous Ascorbate within two hours of tetracycline. Gastrointestinal discomfort can be minimized by taking the supplement with food. Iron absorption may be reduced when taken with penicillamine or antacids. In patients with renal insufficiency, there is a potential risk for zinc accumulation.
Contraindications
This supplement should not be used by individuals with hemolytic anemia or those who are hypersensitive to any of its ingredients, nor should it be taken by individuals with excessive iron levels in the body.
Side Effects
Common side effects are typically mild and transient, including epigastric pain, nausea, constipation, vomiting, diarrhea, and heartburn. Allergic reactions may also occur, particularly with folic acid administration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Consult your healthcare provider before starting or continuing this supplement if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. It is advised to avoid use during the first trimester of pregnancy unless iron deficiency is clearly indicated. Iron deficiency prophylaxis is recommended during the later stages of pregnancy, especially when zinc supplementation is necessary.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution is advised in individuals with conditions that may lead to iron overload, such as hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, or red cell aplasia. Lack of response to treatment should be further investigated to rule out other causes of anemia.
Overdose Effects
Acute iron overdose can cause a range of symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark stools, vomiting blood, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, metabolic acidosis, high blood sugar, dehydration, drowsiness, pallor, cyanosis, fatigue, seizures, and even coma. Immediate medical attention is required in case of overdose.
