Dexaqua DS

Indications

Dexaqua DS is primarily used to treat carbohydrate and fluid deficiencies, serving as a remedy for water depletion. It is typically prescribed in situations where there is no significant electrolyte loss, making it ideal for replacing lost fluids. Water depletion often occurs when intake fails to match the body’s losses, such as in cases of coma, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), or among elderly individuals who may not drink enough water. One liter of the 5% solution provides approximately 170 calories of easily metabolizable nutrients. Dexaqua DS can also be used alongside calcium bicarbonate and insulin for emergency hyperkalaemia treatment, or during diabetic ketoacidosis management after hyperglycemia has been corrected. Additionally, it may serve as a vehicle for the slow IV infusion of various medications.

Pharmacology

Dextrose is a glucose derivative that replenishes fluids and carbohydrates when administered via IV. A 5% dextrose solution is commonly used to treat hypoglycemia, insulin shock, or dehydration. It also provides nutritional support for patients unable to eat due to illness or injury.

Dosage

• 10% Dextrose Solution: The dosage depends on clinical conditions, age, and body surface area, with a recommended infusion of 20-30 ml/kg at a rapid rate to restore normal circulation.
• Oral Powder:
  • Adults: 10-20 gm as a single dose, repeatable in 10 minutes if necessary.
  • Children (2 years and above): 10-20 gm as a single dose, repeatable in 10 minutes if needed.

Administration Guidelines

1. Inspect the infusion set and solution before use.
2. Tear off the Eurocap’s protective cover.
3. Attach the administration set and fit the connector to the needle.
4. Allow fluid to flow down to the needle tip before closing.
5. Insert the needle into the cleaned venipuncture site and secure with tape.
6. Start the infusion and adjust the drip speed accordingly.

Take medication as prescribed by your physician.

Contraindications

Avoid using Dexaqua DS if you are allergic to dextrose. Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions before use:

• Diabetes
• Breathing problems
• Electrolyte imbalance
• Kidney or liver disease
• Allergies to foods or medications
• Regular blood transfusions

Side Effects

Possible side effects include:

• Severe burning, pain, or swelling at the IV site
• Warmth, redness, or bleeding at the IV site
• Fever, persistent cough
• High blood sugar, headaches, memory issues, fainting, or seizures
• Low potassium levels, anxiety, sweating, pale skin, fast or irregular heart rate

Pregnancy & Lactation

Dexaqua DS is classified as an FDA pregnancy category C drug. It is unknown whether it harms unborn babies or passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before using this medication.

Precautions & Warnings

Carefully monitor serum glucose levels, especially in diabetic patients. Dexaqua DS should not be mixed with whole blood due to the risk of hemolysis and clumping. If rigor occurs during infusion, discontinue immediately. Do not use the solution if it is cloudy, contains particles, or has expired.
