Description

Indications

Dermasol is recommended for individuals aged one year and above to treat the following dermatoses:

  • Psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis)
  • Persistent dermatoses
  • Lichen planus
  • Discoid lupus erythematosus
  • Other skin conditions unresponsive to milder steroids

Composition

Dermasol contains Clobetasol Propionate in various formulations including cream, ointment, scalp application, shampoo, lotion, and spray.

Pharmacology

Clobetasol Propionate, a potent topical corticosteroid, possesses anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. It acts by inhibiting late-phase allergic reactions, mast cell density, eosinophil chemotaxis, and cytokine production.

Dosage

For adults, elderly, and children over one year, apply a thin layer of Dermasol cream or ointment twice daily to affected areas, gently rubbing it in. Treatment should be limited to two consecutive weeks. Different dosing instructions apply to the scalp application, shampoo, lotion, and spray formulations.

Administration

Dermasol is for cutaneous use. Creams are suitable for moist or weeping surfaces, while ointments are preferable for dry or scaly lesions.

Interaction

Co-administered drugs inhibiting CYP3A4 may increase systemic corticosteroid exposure.

Contraindications

Avoid in rosacea, acne vulgaris, and perioral dermatitis. Not recommended for children under one year or for primary cutaneous viral infections.

Side Effects

Prolonged use or extensive application may lead to systemic absorption and hypercorticism features. Local atrophic changes, pigmentation changes, and hypertrichosis are possible. Discontinue if hypersensitivity signs appear.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Limited data exists on its use during pregnancy and lactation. Administer only if benefits outweigh risks.

Precautions & Warnings

Long-term continuous therapy, especially in infants and children, should be avoided to prevent adrenal suppression. Care is required when treating facial areas to avoid atrophic changes. Avoid ocular exposure to prevent potential eye issues.

Use in Special Populations

Children under 12 years old are more susceptible to atrophic changes and adrenal suppression.

Overdose Effects

Acute overdosage is unlikely but chronic misuse may lead to hypercortisolism symptoms.

Therapeutic Class

Dermasol belongs to the category of other topical corticosteroids.

Storage Conditions

Store Dermasol below 30°C, away from light and moisture, and out of children’s reach.
