Indications:
Cefteria is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of various mild-to-moderate bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is used in the management of:
- Acute Bacterial Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis: Caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumoniae (penicillin-susceptible strains).
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media: Caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis: Caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
Please consult a registered healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Pharmacology:
Cefteria contains Ceftibuten, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic known for its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It works by binding to critical proteins in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting cell wall synthesis, and ultimately killing the bacteria. Cefteria is resistant to beta-lactamase enzymes, which makes it effective against many resistant bacteria.
Dosage & Administration:
- Adults: 400 mg once daily for most infections (10 days for most conditions, 7 days for urinary tract infections).
- Pediatric Dosing: For children over 6 months, dosage is 9 mg/kg/day (max 400 mg) once daily for 10 days.
Specific dosages may vary based on the infection type and severity. Always follow the prescribed regimen.
Drug Interactions:
- Theophylline and Antacids do not affect the pharmacokinetics of Cefteria.
- Ranitidine increases the Cmax and AUC of Cefteria.
Contraindications:
Cefteria should not be used by individuals who have a known allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and dizziness. Serious side effects are rare but may include hypersensitivity reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Cefteria is classified as Pregnancy Category B. While no controlled studies exist, it should be used in pregnancy only when the benefits outweigh the potential risks. Caution is advised when using during lactation as it is not known if Cefteria passes into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Prolonged use may lead to the development of drug-resistant organisms. Dosage adjustments may be required for patients with renal impairment. Caution is advised for individuals with gastrointestinal disorders, especially colitis.
Storage & Handling:
Store Cefteria suspension below 25°C, away from light and moisture. After reconstitution, the suspension should be kept in the refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) and used within 14 days. Always shake the bottle well before each use.
