Indications
Cef-3 Max is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is prescribed for acute infections such as:
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI), including otitis media and cases resistant to other antibiotics.
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, such as bronchitis.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) like cystitis, cystourethritis, and pyelonephritis.
- Demonstrated efficacy against pathogens like Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Haemophilus influenzae.
Pharmacology
Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin, acts by disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. It is stable against beta-lactamase enzymes, making it effective against resistant strains. Absorption is not significantly affected by food, with approximately 40-50% absorption rate.
Dosage & Administration
The usual treatment duration is 7 days, extendable to 14 days if necessary. Recommended doses:
- Adults and children over 10 years: 200-400 mg daily, in single or divided doses.
- Children: Doses vary based on age and weight, adjusted for renal function. Specific guidelines are provided for systemic infections and typhoid based on severity.
Interaction
Cef-3 Max may impact prothrombin times in patients on anticoagulant therapy. Caution is advised with concurrent use of other medications; consult healthcare provider.
Contraindications
Avoid Cef-3 Max in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.
Side Effects
Cef-3 Max is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and infrequently, allergic reactions, hematological changes, or mild liver/renal function test alterations.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Limited data on safety during pregnancy and lactation; use only if clearly indicated and under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to antibiotics or severe renal impairment. Potential cross-allergenicity with penicillins. Monitor closely for adverse reactions.
Overdose Effects
In case of overdose, manage with gastric lavage; no specific antidote available. Limited removal by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
Therapeutic Class
Third-generation cephalosporins.
