Description

Indications:

This medication serves to prevent or manage low blood calcium levels in individuals experiencing insufficient calcium intake through their diets. It’s utilized to address conditions such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, latent tetany, postmenopausal osteoporosis, senile osteoporosis, juvenile osteoporosis, drug-induced osteoporosis (phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone), pregnancy and lactation, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), hypoparathyroidism, and post-hip joint plastic surgery.

Additionally, Calbostar demonstrates efficacy against various inflammatory diseases including arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, spondylitis, cardiovascular ailments, encephalitis, retinitis, phlebitis, colitis, and multiple sclerosis. It aids in weight management by curbing the appetite of chronic overeaters and mitigates mood swings while enhancing cognitive function. Furthermore, Calbostar bolsters heart health by optimizing cardiac muscle function. Recent research also suggests its potential in reducing the risk of colon cancer.

Pharmacology:

Calbostar contains Calcium Orotate, a calcium supplement fused with orotic acid, a functional amino acid chelating ligand. Orotic acid facilitates calcium transport across cellular membranes, thereby enhancing intracellular calcium uptake, particularly in bone tissue. It also contributes to healthy cartilage maintenance and plays a role in DNA and RNA synthesis. Notably, Calcium Orotate stands out among calcium supplements for its ability to penetrate complex cell membranes, facilitating its metabolism in cartilage.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Calcium Orotate 400 mg: Typically, 2-3 tablets are recommended daily with meals or as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Calcium Orotate 740 mg: Typically, 1-2 tablets are recommended daily with meals or as directed by a healthcare professional.

Follow healthcare provider’s advice while consuming medication.

Interactions:

Calbostar may reduce the absorption of certain drugs when taken concurrently, including biphosphonates, quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, levothyroxine, phenytoin, and tiludronate disodium. Thiazide-type diuretics can interact with Calbostar, elevating the risk of hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria. Numerous medications and substances may impact calcium absorption, including aluminum- and magnesium-containing antacids, mineral oil, stimulant laxatives, glucocorticoids, oral contraceptives, estrogen compounds, and anti-inflammatories.

Contraindications:

Calcium Orotate is contraindicated in individuals experiencing incomplete or infrequent bowel movements, kidney stones, kidney disease, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalcemia, and extreme dehydration.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Calbostar include abdominal bloating and swelling. Infrequent side effects may include loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, increased thirst/urination, weakness, tiredness, and kidney stone formation.

Precaution is advised for individuals with kidney disease, kidney stones, low stomach acid, heart disease, pancreatic disease, sarcoidosis, or malabsorption syndrome.
