Indications:

Calboral-DX is prescribed for treating and preventing osteoporosis, osteomalacia, tetany, hypoparathyroidism, and disorders of osteogenesis. Additionally, it supplements inadequate calcium intake in childhood diets, treats rickets, supports pregnancy and lactation, and aids elderly patients. It’s also indicated for pancreatitis and as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.

Composition:

Each tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU. DX variant: Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU. Effervescent tablet: Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP.

Pharmacology:

Calcium is vital for numerous bodily functions and plays a crucial role in preventing osteoporosis and fractures. Vitamin D aids in calcium absorption and bone formation. Coral calcium, similar to human bone composition, enhances absorption. Vitamin D3 helps maintain calcium balance.

Dosage & Administration:

Take one tablet once or twice daily with water, preferably with a full stomach, or as directed by a physician. Effervescent tablets should be dissolved in water before oral consumption.

Interaction:

Caution is advised when using Calboral-DX with thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, or ion exchange resins, as it may affect calcium absorption. Avoid concurrent use with bisphosphonates or sodium fluoride.

Contraindications:

Avoid in cases of hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, severe renal insufficiency, or hypersensitivity to its components. Concomitant digoxin therapy requires close monitoring of serum calcium levels.

Side Effects:

Potential side effects include GI irritation, constipation, allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, and skin rash. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should use with caution.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Avoid overdoses during pregnancy, as hypercalcemia may adversely affect fetal development. Use during lactation requires careful consideration due to calcium and vitamin D passage into breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings:

Monitor serum calcium levels during long-term treatment, especially in elderly patients or those with renal impairment. Adjust dosage accordingly. Exercise caution in patients with sarcoidosis or immobilization due to an increased risk of hypercalcemia.

Overdose Effects:

Overdose may lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcemia. Discontinue treatment and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.

Therapeutic Class:

Specific mineral & vitamin combined preparations.

Storage Conditions:

Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children.
