Indications
Brodil Levo is used for the treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in adults, adolescents, and children aged 6 years and older who have reversible obstructive airway conditions.
Use as directed by a registered healthcare professional.
Pharmacology
Levosalbutamol, a selective beta-2 agonist, is a single isomer drug, differing from racemic salbutamol by eliminating the (S)-salbutamol isomer. This formulation provides an effective bronchodilator effect, with the primary mechanism of action unaffected by (S)-salbutamol. As a result, Levosalbutamol offers comparable bronchodilation to racemic salbutamol but at lower doses, significantly reducing beta-related side effects.
Dosage & Administration
Tablets:
- Adults and adolescents (12 years and older): 1-2 mg three times a day.
- Children (6–11 years): 1 mg three times a day.
Syrup:
- Adults: 5-10 ml three times a day.
- Children (6–11 years): 5 ml three times a day.
Use as directed by a registered healthcare professional.
Drug Interactions
Exercise caution when using Brodil Levo with other short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilators or epinephrine. If additional adrenergic drugs are administered, it’s important to monitor for any potential cardiovascular effects.
Contraindications
Levosalbutamol should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Levosalbutamol or any of its components.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include hypocalcemia, palpitations, muscle tremors, and cramps. Other potential side effects are nausea, vomiting, burning sensations in the chest or upper stomach area, and diarrhea.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Levosalbutamol should be used during pregnancy only when the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus. It is not yet known if Levosalbutamol is excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Special caution is needed in cases of acute severe asthma, as the drug’s effects may be enhanced by hypoxia or when combined with xanthine derivatives, steroids, or diuretics. Monitoring of serum potassium levels is recommended in such cases.
Overdose Effects
Overdose symptoms typically involve excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation and may resemble the side effects listed above. In the case of significant overdose, the stomach should be emptied, and a beta-blocker may be used with caution in patients with a history of bronchospasm.
Therapeutic Class
Short-acting selective β2-adrenoceptor stimulants.
Storage Instructions
Store Brodil Levo in a cool, dry place, away from light, and keep it out of reach of children.
