Indications
Recommended for managing and preventing iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiencies, particularly vital during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Pharmacology
Ferrous sulfate replenishes iron, a crucial component of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and various enzymes. It aids in oxygen transport, energy metabolism, tissue growth, and DNA repair.
Dosage & Administration
Adults or elderly: Take 1 capsule daily; in severe cases, 2 capsules may be necessary. Children over 1 year old: Administer 1 capsule daily. The capsule can be opened and the pellets mixed with soft cool food, avoiding chewing.
Interaction
Be cautious when combining with antibiotics (Quinolone antibiotics) to avoid potential interactions. Iron may reduce antibiotic absorption, affecting their effectiveness. Space out iron intake two hours before or after antibiotic consumption.
Contraindications
Avoid use in individuals hypersensitive to the product’s components or with excess iron levels.
Side Effects
Common side effects include dark stools, nausea, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Zinc may also cause gastrointestinal distress. Timed-release pills aim to minimize stomach discomfort. Allergic reactions are rare.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoid medication during the first trimester of pregnancy if possible. Iron administration during this period requires evidence of iron deficiency, while zinc and folic acid supplementation may be necessary throughout pregnancy due to inadequate nutrition.
Precautions & Warnings
Monitor patients at risk of iron overload closely, such as those with haemochromatosis or hemolytic anaemia. Iron and zinc may interfere with tetracycline absorption, and iron absorption may be affected by penicillamine and antacids. Manage potential interactions by spacing out administration.
Therapeutic Class
Iron, Vitamin, and Mineral Preparation.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30 degrees Celsius, away from light and moisture, and out of children’s reach.
