Indications
- Xfin tablet: Treatment of onychomycosis (toenail or fingernail fungal infection) due to dermatophytes.
- Xfin granules: Indicated for Tinea Capitis.
- Xfin cream: Treats fungal skin infections caused by various fungi and yeast, including T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum, T. violaceum, Microsporum canis, Epidermophyton floccosum, and Candida species.
- Xfin 1% Spray: Used for treating tinea skin infections and pityriasis (tinea) versicolor caused by Malassezia furfur.
Pharmacology
Terbinafine inhibits the biosynthesis of Ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, resulting in fungal cell death.
Dosage & Administration
- Terbinafine tablet: Once daily for 6 weeks for fingernail onychomycosis and 12 weeks for toenail onychomycosis.
- Terbinafine granules: Dosage varies based on body weight, up to 6 weeks.
- Terbinafine cream: Applied once or twice daily for 1-2 weeks, depending on the condition.
- Terbinafine 1% Spray: Applied once or twice daily for 1 week, depending on the condition.
Interaction
- Terbinafine is an inhibitor of the CYP450 2D6 isozyme and may interact with drugs metabolized by this enzyme.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to terbinafine.
Side Effects
- Adverse events include gastrointestinal symptoms, liver test abnormalities, rashes, taste disturbances, and, rarely, liver failure and serious skin reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid terbinafine use during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to limited data on safety.
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor liver function during terbinafine treatment, especially in patients with pre-existing liver disease.
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients; no dosage adjustment needed for elderly patients.
Overdose Effects
- Limited clinical experience with overdose; symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and headache.
