Indications
Tynifer is prescribed for the treatment of iron deficiency in adults.
Always follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional.
Pharmacology
Tynifer contains Ferric Maltol, which facilitates iron absorption across the intestinal lining, aiding its transfer to transferrin and ferritin. Clinical studies have shown its effectiveness in enhancing serum iron levels, including ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT).
Dosage & Administration
- Route: Oral, preferably on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
- Capsule Handling: Do not open, crush, or chew the capsule.
- Recommended Dose: 30 mg twice daily.
- Duration: Treatment generally lasts for at least 12 weeks, depending on the severity of iron deficiency. Therapy should continue until ferritin levels normalize.
Use in Children: The safety and efficacy of Ferric Maltol have not been established for pediatric patients.
Always follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional.
Drug Interactions
- With Medications:
- Avoid combining Tynifer with dimercaprol, as it may increase the risk of kidney toxicity.
- Tynifer may reduce the absorption of certain medications such as mycophenolate, ethynyl estradiol, ciprofloxacin, and doxycycline. Administer these medications at least 4 hours apart from Tynifer.
- With Food: Consuming food during Tynifer administration can decrease iron absorption.
Contraindications
Tynifer should not be used in patients with:
- Hypersensitivity to Ferric Maltol or any of its components.
- Conditions like hemochromatosis or other iron overload syndromes.
- Those receiving frequent blood transfusions.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Flatulence
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Discolored stool
- Abdominal discomfort
- Nausea and vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
Ferric Maltol is minimally absorbed systemically and is unlikely to expose the fetus or breastfed child to the drug. Limited data is available regarding its presence in breast milk, effects on the infant, or impact on milk production.
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid use during active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) flare-ups, as it may worsen gastrointestinal inflammation.
- Do not use in patients with iron overload or those receiving intravenous iron.
- Assess and monitor iron levels before and during treatment.
- Accidental overdose of iron-containing products can be fatal in children under 6 years. Seek immediate medical attention in case of overdose.
Overdose Management
Though specific overdose data for Tynifer is unavailable, signs of iron overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Severe cases could result in metabolic acidosis or systemic toxicity. Excess iron may accumulate in storage tissues, leading to hemosiderosis.
