Indications
Turbocef is utilized for treating infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: Effective against Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media: Targets Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis (including beta-lactamase strains), and Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Acute Bacterial Maxillary Sinusitis: Treats infections from Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae (non-beta-lactamase strains).
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Addresses pneumonia and other infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae (including beta-lactamase strains), Klebsiella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli.
- Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis & Secondary Infections: Targets Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae (beta-lactamase negative strains), and Haemophilus parainfluenzae (beta-lactamase negative strains).
- Skin and Skin-Structure Infections: Effective against Staphylococcus aureus (including beta-lactamase strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Urinary Tract Infections: Treats E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
- Bone and Joint Infections: Targets Staphylococcus aureus (penicillinase and non-penicillinase strains).
- Gonorrhoea: Effective against Neisseria gonorrhoeae (both penicillinase and non-penicillinase strains).

Pharmacology
Turbocef, containing cefuroxime, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with bactericidal properties against many common pathogens, including those resistant to ampicillin and amoxicillin. Cefuroxime remains effective against β-lactamase-producing strains due to its stability.
Dosage
Tablet or Suspension:
- Adolescents and Adults (13 years and older):
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 250 mg twice daily (b.i.d.) for 5-10 days.
- Acute Bacterial Maxillary Sinusitis: 250 mg b.i.d. for 10 days.
- Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis: 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days.
- Secondary Bacterial Infections of Acute Bronchitis: 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days.
- Uncomplicated Skin Infections: 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days.
- Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections: 250 mg b.i.d. for 7-10 days.
- Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea: 1000 mg as a single dose.
- Community Acquired Pneumonia: 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days.
- MDR Typhoid Fever: 500 mg b.i.d. for 10-14 days.
- Early Lyme Disease: 500 mg b.i.d. for 20 days.
- Pediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years):
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for 5-10 days.
- Acute Otitis Media: 30 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for 10 days.
- Acute Bacterial Maxillary Sinusitis: 30 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for 10 days.
- Impetigo: 30 mg/kg/day b.i.d. for 10 days.
Parenteral:
- Adults:
- General Dosing: 750 mg IM or IV three times daily; may increase to 1.5 gm three times daily for severe infections.
- Surgical Prophylaxis: 1.5 gm IV at induction; up to 3 additional doses of 750 mg every 8 hours.
- Pneumonia & Chronic Bronchitis Exacerbations: 1.5 gm IV twice daily for 2-3 days, then 500 mg orally for 7-10 days.
- Gonorrhoea: 1.5 gm as a single dose (2 x 750 mg injections).
- Children (over 3 months):
- General Dosing: 30-100 mg/kg/day divided into 3 or 4 doses.
- Bone and Joint Infections: 150 mg/kg/day, divided every 8 hours.
Administration
Use freshly reconstituted solutions. Maintain potency for 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5°C.

No known hazardous interactions reported.
Contraindications
Do not use in patients allergic to cephalosporins.
Side Effects
Generally mild and transient; may include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances. Prolonged use can cause overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms like Candida.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B: Use during pregnancy only if necessary. Cefuroxime is excreted in breast milk; exercise caution when administering to nursing women.
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor for skin reactions and liver issues.
- May reduce hormonal contraceptive effectiveness; consider alternative methods.
- Avoid abrupt discontinuation; taper off gradually under supervision.
