Description

Indications

Trimebutine maleate is indicated for treating and relieving symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (spastic colon) and postoperative paralytic ileus. It helps accelerate the resumption of intestinal transit following abdominal surgery.

Pharmacology

Trimebutine maleate acts as a noncompetitive spasmolytic agent with moderate affinity for opiate receptors and significant anti-serotonin activity, particularly on ‘mu’ receptors. It regulates abnormal intestinal activity by enhancing synchronization between electrophysiological spikes and contractions in isolated guinea pig strips of colon and ileum, without altering normal motility.

Dosage & Administration

For adults, the recommended dosage is 100 mg to 200 mg, three times daily before meals, as advised by a healthcare professional.

Interactions

Trimebutine maleate may prolong d-tubocurarine-induced curarization. No other drug interactions have been observed during clinical trials.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to trimebutine maleate or any excipient.

Side Effects

Trimebutine maleate is generally well tolerated. Infrequently reported adverse effects may include dry mouth, unpleasant taste, diarrhea, dyspepsia, epigastric pain, nausea, constipation, drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, and sensations of temperature change.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although teratological studies have not shown adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes, the use of trimebutine maleate in pregnant women is not recommended. Its excretion into breast milk is unknown; therefore, caution is advised during breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Special precautions should be taken in elderly patients and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Overdose Effects

No cases of overdose have been reported; however, if oral overdosage occurs, gastric lavage is recommended. Treatment should address observed symptoms.

Therapeutic Class

Trimebutine maleate belongs to the class of anticholinergics.

Storage Conditions
