Indications

Terazon is primarily indicated for the treatment of:

• Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Effective in alleviating symptoms associated with BPH.
• Hypertension: Used as an antihypertensive medication to manage high blood pressure.

Description

Terazon is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker, specifically designed for prolonged action. A quinazoline derivative, Terazon is rapidly absorbed and begins showing effects within 15 minutes of oral ingestion.

Pharmacology

Terazosin selectively targets alpha-1-adrenoceptors, causing the relaxation of smooth muscles in blood vessels and the prostate. This action helps lower blood pressure and improves urine flow in patients with BPH by reducing pressure on the urethra. Additionally, long-term use promotes apoptosis of prostate cells and enhances the expression of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta1), which plays a critical role in cellular regulation and tissue remodeling.

Dosage & Administration

For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH):

• Initial dose: 1 mg at bedtime.
• Subsequent dose: Increase gradually to a range of 5-10 mg per day based on individual response.

For Hypertension:

• Initial dose: 1 mg at bedtime.
• Subsequent dose: Increase gradually to a range of 2-10 mg per day, as necessary, for optimal blood pressure control.

Interactions

• Terazon may increase the likelihood of dizziness when combined with ACE inhibitors or diuretics.
• There are no known significant interactions with common medications, including analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, antiarrhythmics, and hypoglycemic agents.

Contraindications

Terazon should not be used in individuals who have a known hypersensitivity to Terazosin or similar medications.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

• Postural hypotension (low blood pressure when standing).
• Dizziness, fatigue, and peripheral edema (swelling in the limbs).
• Urinary frequency and priapism (prolonged erection) may occur in some cases.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: The safety of Terazon during pregnancy has not been fully established, so it should only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the risks.
• Lactation: It is not known whether Terazon is excreted in breast milk. Caution is advised when administering to nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

• First dose effect: The first dose of Terazon may cause significant hypotension within 30-90 minutes. It is recommended to take it before bedtime.
• Use caution when combining Terazon with other antihypertensive medications to prevent excessive lowering of blood pressure.
• Patients should be aware of the potential for syncope (fainting) and avoid activities like driving until they understand how the medication affects them.

Overdose Effects

In the case of an overdose, Terazon may cause severe hypotension (low blood pressure). Immediate treatment focuses on stabilizing the blood pressure and heart rate, which may involve lying the patient down and administering vasopressor agents as necessary.
