Pharmacology
This medication combines two well-established compounds: Flupentixol, a neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant effects at low doses, and Melitracen, a thymoleptic with mood-enhancing properties. Together, these ingredients provide a balanced formula that delivers antidepressant, anxiolytic, and activating effects.
- Flupentixol reaches maximum serum concentration within approximately 4 hours after oral intake, with a half-life of about 35 hours.
- Melitracen also peaks within 4 hours of oral administration, with a half-life of around 19 hours.
The combination of Flupentixol and Melitracen does not affect the pharmacokinetics of each individual compound.
Dosage & Administration
For Adults:
- Typically, 2 tablets daily, taken in the morning and at noon. In more severe cases, the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.
For Elderly Patients:
- Start with 1 tablet in the morning.
Maintenance Dose:
- Generally, 1 tablet in the morning. For patients experiencing insomnia or severe restlessness, additional sedative treatment may be required during the acute phase.
Always follow the advice of a registered healthcare provider.
Drug Interactions
This medication may increase sensitivity to alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants. Co-administration with MAO inhibitors can lead to hypertensive crises. Additionally, the combined use of neuroleptics and thymoleptics may reduce the antihypertensive effects of guanethidine and similar drugs, while enhancing the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline.
Contraindications
Do not use this tablet in the following conditions:
- Immediate recovery phase following a myocardial infarction
- Bundle-branch conduction defects
- Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
- Acute intoxication with alcohol, barbiturates, or opioids
- Patients who have used MAO inhibitors within the last two weeks
- Not recommended for excitable or hyperactive individuals due to the activating effects of the medication
Side Effects
When taken at the recommended doses, side effects are rare but may include transient restlessness and insomnia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
This medication is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation. Always consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
Precautions & Warnings
If the patient has previously been treated with sedative tranquilizers, these should be tapered off gradually.
Overdose Effects
In the event of an overdose, symptoms may predominantly reflect melitracen toxicity, particularly anticholinergic effects, with rarer extrapyramidal symptoms due to Flupentixol.
Treatment includes supportive care, gastric lavage, and activated charcoal. Respiratory and cardiovascular support should be provided as needed. Epinephrine (adrenaline) should not be used in overdose situations. Convulsions can be managed with diazepam, while extrapyramidal symptoms can be treated with biperiden.
