Indications
Tazoskin is indicated for the management of plaque psoriasis and is effective in treating facial acne.
Follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional regarding medication use.
Pharmacology
Tazarotene, a prodrug in the retinoid family, undergoes rapid deesterification in humans and animals, converting to its active carboxylic acid form. In both in vitro and cell culture studies, Tazarotene has been shown to inhibit the expression of MRP8, a prominent inflammatory marker found at elevated levels in the epidermis of psoriasis patients. Additionally, in human keratinocyte cultures, it suppresses the formation of the cornified envelope, a key factor in the development of psoriatic scales.
Dosage & Administration
For Psoriasis: Apply Tazarotene cream once daily in the evening to affected psoriatic lesions, using a thin film sufficient to cover the lesions (2 mg/cm²). Ensure the skin is dry if bathing or showering prior to application. If using emollients, they should be applied at least one hour before Tazarotene cream.
For Acne: Gently cleanse the face. Once the skin is dry, apply a thin layer (2 mg/cm²) of Tazarotene cream 0.1% to the areas affected by acne, once daily in the evening.
Follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional regarding medication use.
Interaction
Avoid using Tazoskin in conjunction with other dermatological products and cosmetics that have a strong drying effect. It is recommended to allow the skin to recover from these products before starting Tazoskin cream. Caution is advised when using topical steroids in psoriasis management, as they may pose risks; careful patient monitoring is essential. Avoid using near open flames.
Contraindications
Tazarotene may cause fetal harm if used during pregnancy. It is contraindicated for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. If pregnancy occurs during treatment, discontinue use immediately and inform the patient of potential risks to the fetus. Women of childbearing age should be advised on the importance of effective birth control while using Tazarotene cream.
Side Effects
The most commonly reported adverse reactions associated with Tazoskin cream are localized to the skin. These effects, which occurred in 10-23% of patients, include itching, redness, and burning sensations. For acne treatment, side effects reported in 10-30% of patients include peeling, dryness, facial pain, irritation, and a stinging sensation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Tazarotene is not advised for use during pregnancy due to its potential to cause severe birth defects. Discuss this with your healthcare provider.
Nursing Mothers: It remains unclear if Tazarotene is excreted in breast milk. However, its use during breastfeeding is not recommended, as it may adversely affect nursing infants.
Precautions & Warnings
Tazoskin cream should be applied exclusively to affected areas and is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, eyelids, and mouth. In case of accidental eye contact, rinse thoroughly with water. Retinoids should not be used on skin affected by eczema due to the risk of severe irritation. Patients should be advised to use sunscreen and protective clothing while using Tazoskin cream. Some individuals may experience excessive itching, burning, skin redness, or peeling. If such effects occur, discontinue use until the skin is restored, or reduce the dosage.
Use in Special Populations
Pediatric Use: Research on Tazoskin has primarily been conducted in adults, with limited information available regarding its use in children under 12 (gel) and under 18 (cream).
Elderly Use (Over 65 years): There is no specific information comparing the effects of Tazoskin in elderly populations to other age groups.
Overdose Effects
Excessive topical application may lead to significant redness, peeling, or discomfort. Accidental ingestion may result in side effects similar to those caused by excessive oral intake of vitamin A or other retinoids. Monitor patients closely and provide supportive care as necessary.
Therapeutic Class
