Splendora 5%

Indications:

Splendora is indicated for the treatment of androgenic alopecia in both males and females, as well as for stabilizing hair loss in patients with androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata.

Pharmacology:

Minoxidil stimulates hair growth by enhancing oxygen, blood, and nutrient supply to hair follicles. It widens blood vessels and inhibits androgen hormones that affect hair follicles. After topical application, approximately 1.4% of the applied dose is absorbed through the intact scalp. Absorption can be increased by higher doses, more frequent dosing, or reducing the stratum corneum barrier. Systemic effects are minimal, with about 95% of absorbed drug eliminated within 4 days post-application.

Dosage & Administration:

Apply 1 ml (7 sprays) of Minoxidil topical solution twice daily, 12 hours apart, on clean, dry scalp. Start at the center of the affected area and spread outwards. Maximum daily dose should not exceed 2 ml. Allow solution to remain on scalp for about 4 hours before washing. Night-time application should be done 2-4 hours before bedtime. Avoid massaging into scalp or using a hair dryer. Do not mix with hair oils, apply more than twice daily, ingest orally, or apply to other body parts to prevent adverse effects and unintended hair growth.

Interaction:

Avoid using Splendora with other topical agents that alter the stratum corneum barrier, like tretinoin or dithranol, to prevent enhanced absorption and potential adverse effects.

Contraindications:

Splendora should not be used in patients with cardiac abnormalities, children under 18 years, those using occlusive dressings or other scalp medicines, or individuals with inflamed, infected, or irritated scalp conditions (including psoriasis and sunburn).

Side Effects:

Common side effects include minor dermatological reactions such as dermatitis or hypertrichosis, occurring in 0.1–5% of patients.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Avoid using Minoxidil topical solution during pregnancy and lactation due to potential risks.

Precautions & Warnings:

Splendora may cause scalp irritation. Discontinue use if irritation persists or worsens.

Overdose Effects:

Higher-than-recommended doses or larger application areas may increase systemic absorption. Symptoms of overdose include cardiovascular effects like sodium and water retention, and tachycardia. Manage fluid retention with diuretics and tachycardia with beta-adrenergic blocking agents as needed.
