Description

Indications

Sopilax serves as a remedy for various conditions, including:

  • Constipation stemming from any cause
  • Alleviation of persistent and recurring constipation
  • Bowel preparation prior to surgical procedures, childbirth, or radiological examinations.

Pharmacology

Sodium Picosulfate, a derivative of the triarylmethane group, functions as a stimulant laxative. Following oral intake, it undergoes activation by colonic bacteria, exerting its effects locally within the colon. The activated form stimulates nerve endings in the intestinal wall, leading to colonic peristalsis. This process promotes the accumulation of water and electrolytes in the colonic lumen, facilitating defecation, reducing transit time, and softening stool consistency. Additionally, rectal stimulation enhances motility and induces a sense of rectal fullness, potentially aiding in restoring the natural urge to defecate.

Dosage & Administration

Administered orally, Sopilax is ideally taken at bedtime to induce evacuation the following morning. It’s advisable to commence with the lowest effective dose, which may then be adjusted up to the maximum recommended dosage to achieve regular bowel movements. The maximum daily dosage should not be exceeded:

  • 10 mg tablet dose:
    • Adults and children over 10 years of age: 5-10 mg per day.
    • Children aged 4-10 years: 2.5-5 mg per day.
  • Oral Solution (5 mg/5 ml) dose:
    • Adults and children over 10 years of age: 5-10 ml or one to two teaspoonful per day.
    • Children aged 4-10 years: 2.5-5 ml or half to one teaspoonful per day.
    • Children from one month to 4 years of age: 0.25 ml/kg body weight per day.
  • Concentrated Oral Solution (7.5 mg/ml) dose:
    • Adults and children over 10 years of age: 0.67-1.33 ml per day.
    • Children aged 4-10 years: 0.33-0.67 ml per day.

*Please adhere to the recommendations of a healthcare professional while consuming the medication.

Interactions

Concurrent usage of diuretics or adreno-corticosteroids may elevate the risk of electrolyte imbalance if consumed excessively. Simultaneous administration of antibiotics might diminish the laxative efficacy of Sopilax.

Contraindications

Sopilax is contraindicated in cases of ileus or intestinal obstruction, severe painful and/or feverish acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis) potentially accompanied by nausea and vomiting, acute inflammatory bowel diseases, severe dehydration, and known hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any other component of the product.

Side Effects

Possible side effects may include hypersensitivity reactions, dizziness, syncope, vasovagal response, gastrointestinal disturbances, diarrhea, abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There are no reported adverse effects on pregnancy or the fetus attributed to Sopilax usage. However, its administration during the first trimester should be avoided. Clinical evidence indicates minimal excretion of the active moiety of sodium Picosulfate and its glucuronides in the milk of healthy lactating females.
