Pharmacology
Rutix contains ofloxacin, a synthetic antibacterial agent effective against a wide spectrum of Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms. By inhibiting DNA gyrase, an essential enzyme in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair, ofloxacin demonstrates bactericidal activity. Upon oral administration, it is rapidly absorbed, with nearly 100% bioavailability in tablet form. With a distribution into body tissues and fluids, its half-life ranges from 4.6 to 6.9 hours. The majority of the oral dose is excreted in urine within 48 hours.
Dosage & Administration
Dosage recommendations vary based on the type and severity of the infection. For adults, the range is typically 200 mg to 800 mg daily, with larger doses administered in divided doses. Specific dosing instructions are provided for different indications, including enteric fever, shigellosis, tuberculosis, and various infections of the respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems. Special considerations are given for patients with impaired liver function, although Rutix is generally not recommended for children.
For Rutix Eye & Ear Drops, specific instructions are provided for instillation in the affected eye(s) and ear(s), with duration of treatment limited to avoid overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms and secondary infections.
Interaction
Certain antacids and minerals may interfere with the absorption of Rutix, necessitating caution when co-administering these substances.
Contraindications
Ofloxacin should be avoided in patients with known hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolone antibacterials, a history of epilepsy, or a lowered seizure threshold. It is generally contraindicated in children, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
