Indications
Revofer serves as an effective remedy for iron deficiency anemia in adult patients who:
- Experience intolerance to oral iron or unsatisfactory responses to it.
- Have non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease.
Description
Revofer, comprising colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with Carboxymaltose, a carbohydrate polymer facilitating iron release, aids in replenishing iron levels.
Dosage & Administration
Ferric Carboxymaltose dosing entails a stepwise procedure:
- Determination of Iron Need: Assess the iron requirement based on the patient’s weight and hemoglobin level.
- Calculation and Administration of Iron Dose(s): Administer Ferric Carboxymaltose doses within recommended limits, considering patient weight and iron requirements.
- Post-Iron Repletion Assessments: Clinically evaluate patients post-administration for iron repletion efficacy.
Interaction
Formal drug interaction studies with Revofer have not been conducted.
Contraindications
Ferric Carboxymaltose use is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity to its components, serious hypersensitivity to parenteral iron products, non-iron deficiency anemia, and evidence of iron overload or utilization disturbances.
Side Effects
While side effects of Revofer are infrequent, they may include nausea, headache, dizziness, hypertension, injection site reactions, and more.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use of Ferric Carboxymaltose during pregnancy requires careful evaluation of benefits versus risks. Limited data suggests minimal risk during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylactic-type reactions, have been reported. Monitor patients for signs of hypersensitivity during and after administration. Hypertension and laboratory test alterations may occur post-administration.
Use in Special Populations
In patients with haemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease, limit daily injection dose to 200 mg iron. Revofer is not recommended for children under 14 years due to lack of study.
Overdose Effects
Excessive Revofer dosages may lead to iron accumulation, necessitating monitoring of iron parameters and appropriate medical intervention if accumulation occurs.
Therapeutic Class
Revofer falls under the category of Parenteral Iron Preparations.
Storage Conditions
Store Revofer in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, away from light, and out of reach of children.
