Indications
Quinivir serves as a potent solution for various conditions, including:
- Acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
- Malaria
Pharmacology
Hydroxychloroquine Sulphate, a synthetic derivative of quinine, functions as an immunosuppressant. It effectively inhibits the production of rheumatoid and acute phase reactants, while also bolstering lysosomal membrane stability in white blood cells. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in impeding the activity of enzymes responsible for cartilage breakdown. Moreover, Hydroxychloroquine Sulphate disrupts the cell walls of infected red blood cells, effectively targeting and eliminating developing parasites.
Dosage & Administration
Hydroxychloroquine Sulphate tablets are administered orally with food to mitigate any potential stomach discomfort.
- Acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis: Daily dosage typically ranges from 400 to 600 mg. Once a positive response is observed (usually within 4 to 8 weeks), the dosage can be tapered down to 50%.
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Initial dosage usually involves 400 mg once or twice daily, with adjustments based on individual patient response. Maintenance doses typically range between 200 to 400 mg daily.
- Malaria: For adults, an initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg after 6-8 hours, and subsequent doses of 400 mg over two consecutive days. Pediatric dosage is determined by body weight, administered over a three-day period.
Follow healthcare professional guidance for optimal medication usage.
Side Effects
While generally well-tolerated, Quinivir may lead to occasional side effects such as nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, loss of appetite, diarrhea, tiredness, weakness, headache, and visual disturbances, particularly within the initial days of use.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Usage during pregnancy should be carefully considered, taking into account potential benefits versus risks. Consultation with a healthcare provider is essential, especially as small amounts of the medication can be present in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Due to heightened sensitivity in children, it’s imperative to keep 4-aminoquinoline compounds, like Quinivir, out of their reach. Regular ophthalmologic examinations are advised at intervals of 12 months.
Overdose Effects
Overdose symptoms may include headache, drowsiness, visual disturbances, cardiovascular collapse, convulsions, and respiratory/cardiac arrest. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention is crucial, including gastric lavage to eliminate excess medication.
Therapeutic Class
Quinivir belongs to the therapeutic classes of anti-malarial drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and drugs utilized for rheumatoid arthritis treatment.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, away from direct light and moisture, and ensure it’s kept out of children’s reach.
