Pharmacology
Sulindac, the active ingredient in Olida, is a potent NSAID with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic effects. It works primarily by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, which is responsible for pain and inflammation. Once absorbed, Sulindac is metabolized into its active form, the sulfide metabolite, which exerts its therapeutic effects.
Dosage & Administration
Olida should be taken orally twice daily with food to reduce gastrointestinal irritation. The maximum recommended dose is 400 mg/day. Below are the recommended starting dosages:
- Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis: Start with 150 mg/day.
- Acute Painful Shoulder & Acute Gouty Arthritis: Start with 200 mg twice daily.
Dosage adjustments should be made according to the patient’s response and tolerability.
Always follow the dosage prescribed by your physician.
Drug Interactions
Olida can interact with various medications and substances:
- Aspirin: Reduces the bioavailability of the active metabolite.
- Paracetamol (Acetaminophen): Prolonged use may increase renal risks.
- Probenecid: May alter Olida’s plasma concentrations.
Patients taking anticoagulants or hypoglycemic drugs should be monitored closely.
Contraindications
Olida should not be used in patients who:
- Are allergic to Sulindac or any of its components.
- Have a history of gastric bleeding or active peptic ulcers.
- Are pregnant (especially in the third trimester) or lactating.
