Pharmacology
Nitazoxanide is a synthetic antiprotozoal agent intended for oral use. Its antiprotozoal properties stem from its ability to inhibit the Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxido Reductase (PFOR) enzyme-dependent electron transfer reaction, which is vital for the anaerobic energy metabolism of protozoa. Both Nitazoxanide and its active metabolite, tizoxanide, have demonstrated effectiveness in vitro against the growth of Cryptosporidium parvum sporozoites and Giardia lamblia trophozoites.
