Indications
This ointment is versatile, aiding in the treatment of infected wounds, burns, or skin grafts, and effectively prepares donor sites for skin grafting while preventing infections in extensive burns and contaminated wounds. It also proves beneficial in managing chronic varicose or other indolent ulcers, as well as furuncles, carbuncles, pyoderma, sycosis barbae, impetigo, and acne. Additionally, it addresses secondary infected skin lesions associated with scabies, pediculosis, tinea pedis, and contact and allergic dermatitis.
Composition
Each gram of ointment contains:
- Neomycin Sulphate BP 3.5 mg
- Bacitracin Zinc BP 400 IU
- Polymyxin B Sulphate BP 5000 IU
Pharmacology
This ointment’s combination of Polymyxin B sulfate with Neomycin and Bacitracin zinc ensures broad-spectrum antibacterial action. Polymyxin B sulphate effectively targets gram-negative bacilli, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while Neomycin provides bactericidal action against various gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Bacitracin zinc complements the spectrum by targeting gram-positive bacilli and cocci, enhancing the ointment’s antibacterial efficacy.
Dosage & Administration
For adults, apply a thin layer over the affected area 1-3 times daily until the infection is controlled and healing is complete. Children can use it at adult doses, with adjustments for infants. Avoid use in neonates.
Contraindications
Avoid use in individuals sensitive to any components. Increased absorption in young children, particularly neonates, warrants caution.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, kidney problems, hearing loss, dizziness, and muscle twitching. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Due to potential risks of neomycin crossing the placenta and affecting fetal development, avoid use during pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
Not intended for sterile use in surgical procedures involving abdominal or thoracic cavities. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Ototoxicity to neomycin has been reported.
