Pharmacology:
Ambroxol, the active metabolite of bromhexine, has a more potent bronchosecretolytic effect than its precursor, bromhexine. It enhances mucus flow in the respiratory system by hydrating and thinning the mucus, which eases expectoration and helps alleviate shortness of breath (dyspnea). Ambroxol also stimulates the production of surfactant phospholipids in alveolar cells, lowering surface tension in the alveoli for better lung function. Additionally, it reduces bronchial hyperactivity and has anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting cellular cytokines and arachidonic acid metabolites. In COPD patients, Ambroxol helps improve airway patency and overall lung health.
