Pharmacology
Macrogol, commonly referred to as polyethylene glycol, functions as an osmotic agent in the gastrointestinal tract, promoting a laxative effect. It increases stool volume, stimulating colonic motility through neuromuscular pathways. This results in enhanced propulsive colonic transport of softened stools, facilitating defecation. The combination of electrolytes with Macrogol allows for exchange across the intestinal mucosa with serum electrolytes, ensuring no net loss or gain of sodium, potassium, or water. Importantly, Macrogol remains unchanged throughout the digestive system and is minimally absorbed.
Dosage & Administration
For adults and children aged 12 years and older: (Powder for Suspension)
- Constipation: Start with 1 sachet daily, with the option to increase to 2-3 sachets daily if necessary.
- Fecal Impaction: Administer 8 sachets within a 6-hour timeframe. Treatment duration typically does not exceed 3 days.
- Renal Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment is needed for constipation or fecal impaction.
- Instructions: Dissolve each sachet in 125 ml of water. For fecal impaction, 8 sachets can be dissolved in 1 liter of water. Refrigerate the solution and discard any unused portion after 6 hours.
For adults and children aged 12 years and older: (Oral Solution)
- Constipation: Mix 25 ml of Polyethylene Glycol 3350 and electrolytes oral solution with 100 ml of water once daily (totaling 125 ml). This can be increased to 2-3 doses of 25 ml daily, depending on individual response.
- Fecal Impaction: Take 8 doses of 25 ml daily (each mixed with 100 ml of water). Treatment for fecal impaction should not exceed 3 days.
- Instructions: Add 25 ml of the oral solution to 100 ml of water (total volume of 125 ml). Discard any diluted solution not used within 24 hours.
- Usage should follow the guidance of a registered healthcare professional.
Interaction
The absorption of other medications may be temporarily reduced when using Movilax. Isolated cases have reported decreased efficacy of some concomitant medications, including anti-epileptics.
Contraindications
Do not use in cases of intestinal perforation or obstruction due to structural or functional gut wall disorders, ileus, severe inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, or toxic megacolon. Individuals with hypersensitivity to any active ingredient should avoid this product.
Side Effects
Generally well tolerated; however, potential side effects may include allergic reactions, electrolyte imbalances (notably hyperkalemia and hypokalemia), abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, headaches, and peripheral edema.
Pregnancy & Lactation
No adverse effects are anticipated during pregnancy, as systemic absorption of Macrogol (3350) is minimal. This oral solution is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with negligible systemic exposure for nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
For patients with compromised cardiovascular function: when treating fecal impaction, limit intake to a maximum of two sachets per hour. If any symptoms arise indicating fluid or electrolyte imbalance (e.g., edema, breathlessness, increasing fatigue, dehydration, or cardiac issues), discontinue use of Movilax and address any abnormalities accordingly. Prolonged use of laxatives is discouraged, as it may lead to dependency.
Overdose Effects
In cases of severe pain or distention, nasogastric aspiration may be necessary. Significant fluid loss due to diarrhea or vomiting may require correction of electrolyte disturbances.
Therapeutic Class
