Indications
Melphin is a highly effective treatment for intestinal worm infections, including pinworm, roundworm, and hookworm. As an anthelmintic medication, it works by paralyzing the worms, allowing the body to naturally expel them through stool. Melphin is particularly indicated for infections caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Ancylostoma duodenale/Necator americanus, and Trichostrongylus. It can also be used for self-treatment of pinworm, but for other worm infections, it should be taken only as prescribed by a doctor. Melphin is not recommended for children under 2 years unless advised by a healthcare professional.
Pharmacology
Melphin contains Pyrantel Pamoate, a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent that causes worms to lose their grip on the intestinal wall and be passed out naturally. The medication is minimally absorbed by the human intestine, ensuring it acts specifically on the worms. In cases of heavy worm infestations, there may be a risk of intestinal blockage, especially if the body tries to expel a large number of worms simultaneously.
Dosage & Administration
Melphin is administered orally, regardless of food or beverage intake. A single dose of 11 mg/kg of body weight (up to a maximum of 1 gram) is recommended for treating infections. For pinworm, repeating the dose after two weeks may be necessary.
Always follow your doctor’s advice before taking this medication.
Contraindications
Avoid using Melphin in individuals allergic to Pyrantel or any ingredients in this formulation.
Side Effects
At the recommended dosage, Melphin is generally well-tolerated. However, higher doses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Rare side effects include dizziness, headache, and skin rash.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Melphin should not be used during pregnancy due to limited studies. It is also not recommended for use in children under 1 year of age.
Precautions & Warnings
Melphin should not be taken alongside Piperazine, as the two are antagonistic. Keep out of reach of children and use with caution in patients with liver conditions.
Use in Special Populations
- Pediatric Use: The safety and efficacy of Melphin in children under 2 years of age have not been fully established. Use only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
- Hepatic Impairment: Patients with liver disorders should use Melphin with caution.
