Description

Indications

Levostar is recommended for managing or preventing bronchospasm in adults, adolescents, and children aged 6 years and older who have reversible obstructive airway disease.

Pharmacology

Levosalbutamol, a single isomer beta 2-agonist, is distinct from racemic salbutamol due to the absence of (S)-salbutamol. It serves as an efficient bronchodilator, with its primary mechanism of action unaffected by (S)-salbutamol. Consequently, Levosalbutamol achieves clinically comparable bronchodilation with doses that significantly reduce beta-mediated side effects when compared to racemic salbutamol.

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet:
    • Adults and adolescents over 12 years: 1-2 mg thrice daily.
    • Children (6-11 years): 1 mg thrice daily.
  • Syrup:
    • Adults: 5-10 ml thrice daily.
    • Children (6-11 years): 5 ml thrice daily.
Please consume medication as per the advice of a healthcare professional.

Interactions

Exercise caution when using other short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilators or epinephrine concurrently with Levostar to avoid adverse cardiovascular effects.

Contraindications

Levosalbutamol should not be used in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or any of its components.

Side Effects

Possible side effects may include hypocalcemia, palpitations, fine skeletal muscle tremors, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, substernal or epigastric burning pain, and diarrhea.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Use during pregnancy should be considered only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. The excretion of Levosalbutamol in human milk is unknown. Caution is advised when administering oral Levosalbutamol to nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Exercise caution, particularly in acute severe asthma cases, as Levostar’s effects may be potentiated by hypoxia and concomitant use of xanthine derivatives, steroids, and diuretics. Serum potassium levels should be monitored in such situations.

Overdose Effects

Overdose symptoms may manifest as excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation and the aforementioned side effects. In case of serious poisoning, gastric emptying is recommended, and if necessary, beta-blockers should be administered cautiously in patients with a history of bronchospasm.

Therapeutic Class

Levostar belongs to the class of short-acting selective β2-adrenoceptor stimulants.

Storage Conditions

Keep all medications away from children. Store in a cool, dry place, shielded from light.
