Pharmacology
Levocarnitine, a naturally occurring compound essential in mammalian energy metabolism, plays a crucial role in facilitating the entry of long-chain fatty acids into cellular mitochondria. This process enables the oxidation of substrates, ultimately leading to energy production. While fatty acids are utilized as an energy source in most tissues, except the brain, they play a significant role in energy production in skeletal and cardiac muscles.
Dosage & Administration
For Levocarnitine tablets:
- Adults are typically prescribed 330 mg two or three times daily, depending on individual clinical responses.
- Infants and children are generally advised to take 50 to 100 mg/kg/day in divided doses, not exceeding 3 g/day. The initial dosage usually starts at 50 mg/kg/day and may vary based on clinical responses.
For Levocarnitine solution:
- Adults are recommended to take 10 to 30 ml/day of the 100 ml solution. Initial dosage usually begins at 10 ml/day, gradually increasing while monitoring tolerance and therapeutic responses.
- Infants and children are advised to take 50 to 100 mg/kg/day of the solution, with an initial dosage starting at 50 mg/kg/day and gradually increasing to a maximum of 30 ml/day. The solution can be administered in divided doses, ranging from 2 to 6 spoonfuls, as directed by healthcare professionals.
Side Effects
While Levocar is generally well-tolerated, transient side effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea may occur in some cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is a lack of adequate and well-controlled studies regarding Levocar’s effects on pregnant women. Its use during pregnancy is advised only when clearly needed. Levocarnitine supplementation’s impact on nursing mothers hasn’t been extensively studied. Any potential risks to the child due to excessive carnitine intake should be weighed against the benefits of supplementation.
Precautions & Warnings
Consuming Levocar too rapidly may result in gastrointestinal reactions. Its safety and efficacy haven’t been evaluated in patients with renal insufficiency. Chronic administration of high doses in patients with severely compromised renal function or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) undergoing dialysis may lead to the accumulation of potentially toxic metabolites.
Overdose Effects
To date, there have been no reported cases of toxicity resulting from Levocar overdosage.
Therapeutic Class
Levocar belongs to the category of drugs designed for muscular energy metabolism.
Storage Conditions
Store Levocar below 30°C, away from light, and out of the reach of children.
