  • Symptomatic relief of allergic conditions, including rhinitis and conjunctivitis.
  • Easing complications like itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma.
  • Symptomatic treatment of allergies, such as hay fever and urticaria.

Pharmacology

Ketotifen possesses anti-allergic properties and functions similarly to sodium chromoglycate in asthma prevention. It acts as an antihistamine and demonstrates significant anti-anaphylactic effects, effectively preventing asthmatic attacks. Ketotifen provides sustained inhibition of histamine reactions, distinct from its anti-anaphylactic action. Clinical studies show that Ketotifen is effective when taken orally, comparable to mast cell stabilizers delivered via inhalation, and it significantly reduces the frequency, severity, and duration of asthma attacks. Notably, the full prophylactic effect of Ketotifen may take several weeks to establish and it does not terminate established asthma attacks.

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food, potentially increasing to 2 mg twice daily in severe cases.
  • Children (3 years and older): 1 mg twice daily with food, with a starting dose of 0.5 to 1 mg at night for those prone to sedation.
  • Elderly: Same as adult dosage or as advised by a physician.

Always consult a registered healthcare professional before use.

Interactions

Ketomar may enhance the sedative effects of hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol. Caution is advised when used alongside oral antidiabetic agents, as it may lead to a reversible decrease in platelet count.

Contraindications

Ketotifen is contraindicated in patients experiencing a decrease in platelet count when taken with oral antidiabetics. Its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended, despite no evidence of teratogenic effects.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include drowsiness, dry mouth, and mild dizziness, typically resolving after a few days.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although no teratogenic effects have been observed, the use of Ketotifen is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

To avoid exacerbation of asthma, continue previous treatments for at least two weeks after initiating Ketomar, especially for systemic corticosteroids. If an intercurrent infection occurs, Ketomar should be combined with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Patients should be cautious about operating vehicles or machinery until they understand how Ketomar affects them and should avoid alcohol due to potential enhanced effects of sedatives.

Overdose Effects

Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, headache, bradycardia, and respiratory depression. In case of overdose, gastric lavage or emesis is recommended, alongside general supportive treatment.

Therapeutic Class

Cromoglycate and related medications.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry place away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
