Description
Kerasol FCL is a prescription-only topical treatment aimed at reducing excessive keratin in hyperkeratotic skin disorders. It is effective for conditions such as verrucae and various types of ichthyosis (including vulgaris, sex-linked, and lamellar), keratosis palmaris and plantaris, keratosis pilaris, pityriasis rubra pilaris, and psoriasis affecting the body, scalp, palms, and soles.
Pharmacology
Salicylic Acid serves as a potent keratolytic agent and exhibits mild antiseptic properties upon topical application. At lower concentrations, it acts as a keratoplastic agent, helping to normalize abnormal keratinization. In contrast, at higher concentrations, it exhibits keratolytic activity, promoting skin peeling. Salicylic Acid works by softening and breaking down the stratum corneum, increasing skin hydration due to a lower pH level, which causes the outer layer of skin to swell, soften, and slough off. Care must be taken to avoid skin necrosis, which can result from excessive use. Additionally, at high concentrations, Salicylic Acid can have a caustic effect. Adequate moisture is essential for the medication to function effectively, facilitating the maceration and shedding of epidermal tissue. The compound also possesses weak antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Dosage & Administration
- 6% & 12% Salicylic Acid: Apply once daily to the affected area. If possible, hydrate the area for 5 minutes before application. It’s advisable to cover the area overnight and wash it off in the morning. Suitable for children over 2 years of age.
- 2% Salicylic Acid: Initially apply enough medication to cover the affected area once daily during the first week, then increase to 2 to 3 times daily from the second week, gently massaging the area. After 3-5 minutes, rinse the face with cool water. Safe for children over 2 years.
Always use as directed by a registered healthcare professional.
