Description
Kerasol is a prescription-only topical treatment designed to remove excess keratin buildup in hyperkeratotic skin conditions, such as verrucae, different types of ichthyosis (including vulgaris, sex-linked, and lamellar), keratosis palmaris and plantaris, keratosis pilaris, pityriasis rubra pilaris, and psoriasis (affecting the body, scalp, palms, and soles).
Pharmacology
Salicylic Acid, the active ingredient in Kerasol, exhibits strong keratolytic properties and mild antiseptic effects when applied to the skin. At low concentrations, it promotes keratoplastic effects (normalizing keratin production), while higher concentrations result in keratolytic action (causing the skin to peel). Salicylic Acid works by softening and breaking down the stratum corneum (outer layer of the skin), increasing moisture retention, and altering skin pH to aid in desquamation. Overuse may cause skin necrosis, especially at high concentrations, as it can be caustic. Adequate moisture is necessary for the full effect, promoting skin maceration and exfoliation. It also exhibits weak antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Dosage & Administration
- 6% & 12% Salicylic Acid: Apply to the affected area once daily. If possible, hydrate the area for 5 minutes before application and occlude overnight. Wash off in the morning. Suitable for use in children over 2 years old.
- 2% Salicylic Acid: Apply a thin layer to the affected area once daily during the first week. From the second week, increase to 2-3 applications per day. Rub gently and rinse with cool water after 3-5 minutes. Safe for use in children over 2 years old.
