Pharmacology
Loperamide Hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Imotil, works by inhibiting the peristaltic activity of the intestinal smooth muscles. It interacts with cholinergic and noncholinergic neuronal mechanisms, reducing propulsive peristalsis and increasing intestinal transit time. This medication binds to opiate receptors in the gut wall, thereby decreasing electrolyte and fluid secretion in the intestine. Loperamide Hydrochloride also enhances the tone of the anal sphincter.
