Description

Indications

Hexicord is specifically designed for the prevention of omphalitis (umbilical cord infection) in newborns.

  • Note: Use as per the advice of a registered healthcare professional.

Pharmacology

Hexicord contains Chlorhexidine, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent with potent activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. Chlorhexidine works by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, exerting both bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects depending on its concentration. It kills up to 100% of bacteria within 30 seconds of application. Chlorhexidine binds strongly to skin and provides long-lasting antimicrobial protection. Though there is limited data on its use in neonates, Chlorhexidine’s high efficacy in preventing infections makes it a key agent for umbilical cord care.

Dosage

  • Topical Solution: Apply 7.1% Chlorhexidine Gluconate solution immediately after cutting the umbilical cord, covering the tip, stump, and surrounding base area.
  • Topical Gel: For daily application, apply 3 grams of Chlorhexidine Gluconate gel once a day for seven days. For newborns weighing less than 1.5 kg or born before 32 weeks of gestation, apply a single dose within 24 hours after birth.
  • Ensure complete coverage of the umbilical cord stump and surrounding skin. Avoid contact with other products and occlusive dressings.
  • Note: Follow healthcare professional guidance and local care guidelines for umbilical cord treatment.

Administration

  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after applying the solution.
  • Apply Chlorhexidine to the umbilical cord immediately after birth. Avoid wiping the cord after application, and keep the area dry.
  • Note: For external use only, do not apply to the eyes or mucous membranes.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not applicable to the intended patient group (newborns).

Precautions & Warnings

  • For external use only: Do not ingest or apply to large skin areas. Avoid eye contact; rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
