Indications:
Evit (d-alpha tocopherol) capsules are prescribed to treat and prevent Evit deficiency. Additionally, they are recommended as antioxidants to manage various health conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain, Nerve Damage caused by Chemotherapy, Male Infertility, Age-related Macular Degeneration, Keratectomy, Premenstrual Syndrome, Painful Menstrual Periods, and Heart Disease (to enhance the effectiveness of nitrates).
Pharmacology:
Vitamin E functions as a vital antioxidant, safeguarding polyunsaturated fatty acids and other oxygen-sensitive substances in the body from oxidation. Deficiency in premature neonates may lead to irritability, edema, thrombosis, and hemolytic anemia. In adults and children with low serum tocopherol concentrations, complications such as creatinuria, ceroid deposition, muscle weakness, and decreased erythrocyte survival have been observed.
Dosage & Administration:
Dosage recommendations vary based on the condition. For example, for Age-related Macular Degeneration, the recommended dosage is Vitamin E 400-600 IU daily, while for Heart Disease, it is Vitamin E 200 IU three times daily, and so forth.
Interaction:
Evit may interfere with the absorption of Vitamin A and the function of Vitamin K and can potentiate the effect of Warfarin.
Contraindications:
Evit is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to vitamin E. It should not be taken by patients with rare hereditary problems such as fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency.
Side Effects:
Potential side effects may include diarrhea and abdominal pain with doses greater than 1000 IU daily.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
High doses of vitamin E during pregnancy are not recommended, especially in the first trimester. Its safety during lactation is uncertain.
Precautions & Warnings:
Evit may increase bleeding tendency in patients with vitamin K deficiency or those taking anticoagulant treatments. Monitoring of prothrombin time and INR is advised. It may also increase the risk of thrombosis in certain patients.
Overdose Effects:
Doses exceeding 1000 IU daily may cause transient gastrointestinal disturbances.
Therapeutic Class:
Evit belongs to the therapeutic class of Herbal and Nutraceuticals, specifically Vitamin-E Preparations.
Storage Conditions:
Store Evit in a dry place away from light and heat, and ensure it’s kept out of the reach of children.
