Indications:
Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide are recommended for treating conditions like hyperacidity, peptic ulcer, gastritis, heartburn, sour stomach, and dyspepsia.
Composition:
Each tablet contains:
- Dried Aluminium Hydroxide Gel BP (Al2O3 47%, minimum): 250 mg
- Magnesium Hydroxide BP: 400 mg
Each 5 ml of suspension contains:
- Aluminium Oxide (Equivalent amount of Aluminium Hydroxide Gel USP): 175 mg
- Magnesium Hydroxide (Equivalent amount of Magnesium Hydroxide Paste USP): 225 mg
Pharmacology:
This medication combines non-systemic antacids known for their effectiveness and palatability. They provide relief from hyperacidity without causing acid rebound, constipation, or diarrhea. Aluminium hydroxide gel acts slowly with high neutralizing power, while magnesium hydroxide offers sustained acid neutralization. Both forms also possess an adsorbent property that coats and protects ulcer surfaces, aiding in healing and preventing further irritation of the stomach and duodenal mucosa.
Dosage & Administration:
- Tablet: Take two tablets 1-3 hours after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
- Suspension: Take 2 teaspoons 1-3 hours after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
- Follow your doctor’s advice regarding medication.
Interaction:
Entacyd can interfere with the absorption of medications such as Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin, Tetracyclines, Gabapentin, Phenytoin, Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, Chloroquine, and Phenothiazines.
Contraindications:
Avoid this medication in cases of hypophosphataemia, alkalosis, or hypermagnesaemia, which may lead to abdominal distention due to possible intestinal obstruction.
Side Effects:
Long-term use may result in alkaluria, potentially increasing the risk of nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) through calcium phosphate precipitation.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
It is advisable to avoid using antacid preparations during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Precautions & Warnings:
These antacids can reduce the absorption of tetracycline; therefore, avoid concurrent use.
